Prom Facebook Group

Students at Presentation High School have one less thing to worry about during Prom this year: wearing the same dress as someone else. A new Facebook group called “Prom Dresses 2011″ is saving girls the stress and anxiety of worrying about wearing the same dress as someone else at Prom this year.

This group was created by Presentation’s own senior Emily Wallace. The group is very simple and helpful for all the juniors and seniors going to Presentation’s Prom on May 14.

When a girl finds the prom dress she plans to wear, she takes a picture of it and posts it onto the group wall for all the other group members to see. All members of the group can then make comments and give their opinions on the dress.

Best of all – other students can make sure they do not buy the same dress. Prom is filled with more than enough stress, and this simple and easy process takes some of the anxiety away.

Because it’s important for students to remember the rules, this helpful Facebook group also provides the rules and regulations for dresses that students must follow to prevent being removed from the dance or receiving a detention. With this simple and easy process girls can take some of the stress of Prom away and make sure that they truly shine in their dress on that special day.

Many students are already a member of this group, including juniors Isabella Nguyen and Diborah Wubshet, who found the site helpful.

“I looked back at it each time I found a new dress to make sure I didn’t buy another person’s dress,” Wubshet said. “I really appreciated my friend’s comments, which helped me decide which dress to buy for prom without actually having to wait to ask them what they think.”

When asked about the difficulty of uploading a picture in the group she said, “It was really easy to post in the group all I had to do was upload a picture or you could just post a link on the group wall.”

So if you’re not a member yet, just ask one of your friends to add you and let the anxiety slip away.

How to Get a Boy in 10 (or so) Days…

Boys. You can go to prom with ‘em or you can go without ‘em. But all too often, the fear of asking is what determines one choice from another. Well, never fear, confused Pres girls—the Voice is here to help! Whether you’ve just gotten interested in each other or have been together for a while, here are some suggestions to ask that special someone that you have in mind.

For the Coffee-Addict:
Go to Starbucks. Pick up a coffee cover and write, “Will you go to prom with me?” on said cover. Then, take your prospective date to Starbucks. Pick up their cup for them and slip on the “prom” coffee cover. Then give them the cup and try not to spazz as you wait for their reaction.

For the Gamer:
Give him a videogame cover of a game he doesn’t currently have. Switch the actual video game with a video of you asking him to prom. Then offer to play the game with him.

For the Brave Soul:
Disclaimer: This next one would probably best for someone who doesn’t get embarrassed easily. Give six notes to six of his friends and ask them to deliver them to him once a day for a week. The first note can say “will”, the second, “you”, and so on, until they spell out, “Will you go to prom with.” On the seventh day, show up with the seventh note which will say “me?”

For the Bookworm:
Start an argument with him over an obscure fact in one of their favorite books. Challenge him to look it up. Then pull out said book and tell him to turn to a specific page where it states the answer. When he does, there should be a note taped to the inside of the page asking him to prom.

For the Lover of incredibly lame jokes:
Give the askee an untampered-with bag of flour with a note that says “Look in the flour.” The next day, after he has searched the bag of flour with no luck, give him a rose (or other kind of flower) with a rolled up note in the middle: “Oops! Wrong flower! Will you go out with me anyway?”

For the Mathematically Inclined:
Tell them you have a really hard math problem that needs solving. Then tell them you’ll program it into their calculator. Take said calculator and on the screen spell out “Will you go to prom with me” (for those who don’t write notes on their calculators during class, you get to the letters by pressing 2nd and then the “alpha” key).

For the Puzzler:
Play hangman, and have the secret word spell out “prom.”

For the Debater:
Write a case saying “Resolved: you should go to prom with me.” Then list three contentions why they should do this (ex. Contention 1: we would be adorable together. Can’t argue with that logic!).

For the Talkative:
Sneakily take his phone for a couple minutes, and re-label yourself in his contacts as “prom?” Then call him and wait for him to pick up and answer your query.

For the Movie Critic:
Invite him over to watch a movie. Make a bowl of popcorn and at the bottom of the bowl tape a note saying, “Will you go to prom with me?” Then fill the bowl with popcorn.

For the Walking Dictionary:
Play Taboo with him, and pretend that one of your cards is “prom.” Give him clues like “it’s where you and I should be going on May 8.” Hope that he guesses it correctly…

For the Date that believes himself to secretly be a spy (or if you’re planning on asking Chuck):
Deliver a tape with this message, “Your date, should you choose to accept it, will be with ________ at _________ time on ________(day). You will be picked up by a person wearing ________. Your date will feel like he may self-destruct if you do not reply by ________.”

For the Musician:
Select four songs that the two of you like, and find the sheet music for them. One song should have a “P” in the title, the next an “R”, the third an “O, and the last an “M”. Cut out big red letters spelling “prom” and tape/glue them on top of the original letters in the title. Then lay out the pieces of sheet music in front of him, and the red letters in the title should jump out, spelling “prom.”

For the Gourmet:
Stick a fortune cookie in the microwave for about fifteen minutes till it unfolds. Then stick your own fortune inside, re-fold it, and deliver it to him. (Something along the lines of “in ___ days, you will go to prom with a girl named ____. Just be creative.)

For the Athlete:
If he plays a sport involving a ball (stop snickering, ladies) purchase one and write, “Prom?” on it. After that, you have a couple options. You can deliver it, leave it on his doorstep or throw it at him. Whichever seems the most appealing at the time.

For the Boy:
Just ask him. It’s seven words. I promise you’ll be ok.

Well Pres girls, best of luck in your romance-driven adventures. Have fun planning and executing the asking. And remember the most important thing of all; nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Trend Report: All About Prom

The month of April is rolling around and we all know that means Prom season! You asked your guy in the cutest way, memorized the date and bought your bid. Now all that’s left is the most complex element for girls to execute perfectly: their outfit! Though you may be freaking out about what kind of dress to buy, what shoes to wear and how to do your hair, don’t have an emotional breakdown quite yet. The Voice has all best ideas to make your outfit (and night, of course) one to remember.

Dresses: there are only so many in our area and thousands of girls. No one wants to show up in the same dress as someone else, but even if you do, at least you’ll be confident in the dress you chose. The first dress trend is bright and colorful. Make yourself stand out and look striking while doing so. This is different from typical black and will show your date you’re confident and comfortable being bold.

If bright isn’t for you, another trend this prom season is gold dresses. Gold is timeless and very elegant. Whether your dress is full gold sequins or a faded gold shimmer, the color will make you look more mature.

If you are not into the long prom dresses, you’re in luck. 2010 prom is welcoming short dresses. You will gain more attention in a short dress, since a long one is classic for prom. It will show you are more edgy and are not afraid to stand out and show a little leg. No matter what kind of dress you decide on, the number one most important factor is that you feel comfortable in it.  All dresses can be tailored for a low price to fit your exact size, so if one area is not fitting correctly, you don’t need to change sizes. Also remember that the size does not matter because all designers use a different scale. Just keep in mind that confidence goes a long way, so if you’re happy in your dress, everyone else will love it as well!

Shoes: You found your dress, but now you need some matching shoes. The first step to finding your perfect shoes is to take into consideration the type of dress you have. If your dress has a design already on it, a simple colored shoe is the way to go. If your dress is a solid color, feel free to go as crazy with your shoe design as you want! Just don’t overdo your look and make your appearance too busy. Sparkled shoes are in this season and bring a little pizzazz to your feet (they also help show off your new pedicure)!

If you are a shorter girl or just want to look taller, buy shoes that are similar to the color of your skin tone. This elongates the look of your legs and is very in this season. If you wear stockings, make sure to take them into consideration when picking your shoe color. Finally, if your dress allows you to show off your shoes, you may want to consider heels with straps that wrap around the leg. They draw in immediate attention and are not only in on the runway, but for prom as well. Many of these types of shoes come with the bonus that they help support your feet so that you are more secure in your shoes. Consider these elements when you are shopping for your prom shoes.

Hair: Your look is almost complete, but now something must be done with the un-brushed, knotted ponytail on the side of your head. A total transformation can be made by yourself, your parent or a professional hair stylist. If you are looking for an updo style, messy buns are very trendy this spring. When properly executed, they look elegant yet not to showy. The runways are especially fond of the side bun, so feel free to remain with your lopsided, Pres hair ways.

As many of us have seen, another hair trend is braids. Whether they wrap over your head, are only in your bangs, or reach the back of your head, braids are one of the most popular looks for prom this season. They are easy to do and keep the hair out of your face.

Finally, the half-up look is always big for prom. You can have the best of both worlds with your hair up and down. This will keep the hair out of your way, but still display your beautiful head of hair which is usually covered by a hoodie. Again, no matter what you do with your hair, make sure that you like it. If you don’t like one element of your outfit, you can wind up ruining your entire night! Don’t be afraid to try something new or ask your hairstylist for a few changes.

Pres girls, you are now ready for your 2010 Prom. With a lovely dress, perfectly matching shoes and a hairstyle to complement them both, you will surely be a star of the night. Remember when finding these elements out for prom to stay calm, breathe and most importantly, have a good time!
