Jack Frost is nipping and it’s high time Pres girls were prepared. In warmer months skirts may be fine on their own, but with the cold creeping in, layering is a must. Instead of risking a uniform violation by putting on sweater upon sweater, try one warm coat. School colored pea coats, faux fur coats, and puffer jackets are not only as insulated as multiple layers, but they’re also in this season. Depending on the style and quality of the coat, prices range from $30-55 at Target.

An easy way to heat up the often ignored legs is by buying a pair of tights or socks. Slipping on cozy knee highs enhances both your look and your temperature. The perfect compliment to fancy stockings are boots with wool lining. After all, it’s important to keep your toes warm. Prices usually range between $10-20 dollars for a cozy pair of tights.

Fingers tend to freeze over in the chilly weather, making now an opportune time to break your gloves out. Gloves are an easy on and off and the difference in temperature is noticeable. They come in all kinds of lengths and colors and the soft fabrics are fun to touch. Gloves can be found anywhere from $5-15 dollars at both Claire’s and Target.

While it is a myth that a majority of your body heat comes out of your head, a good ten percent does and hats are an easy solution to that problem. Whether it’s a beret, a knit hat, or one with animal ears, hats are the hottest trend in headgear. With all their different shapes and sizes, it’s no wonder that hats are an important accessory to the winter wardrobe. Hats can be found at around $20 at the local accessory stores.

Last but not least, a Pres favorite is the classic scarf. Scarves are stylish, practical, and can be worn in all kinds of ways. They allow for repurposing; you could wear the same scarf for a week and have a different feel to it each day. A nice scarf can last a long time, making it a great accessory to return to again and again. Scarves range between $10-25 dollars depending on their longevity.

Photo trends have taken the younger generation by storm and they have gotten progressively more creative. From mimicking inanimate objects to playing with your food, they never cease to bring out a laugh. The following are the up and coming trends of our generation.

Planking
Planking consists of lying face down in strange locations while your body is in a straight position. Your body can be compared to a wooden board, thus the name planking. Pictures are taken of you “planking” and usually posted on the Internet.

Peeping
Peeping could also be considered as creeper pictures and has become a popular fad. People will hide behind objects in pictures and only show the top half of their faces. The point is to hide and not be noticeable. A supposedly normal looking picture can be drastically altered when the viewer notices the person peeping in the background.

Coning
Coning is the new rage at fast food restaurants. When coning, you order an ice cream cone in the drive through. After you pay and the cashier goes to hand you the ice cream, you grab the ice cream from the top instead of the cone like it was put in your hand upside down. The cashier will be shocked and you will have the perfect opportunity to snap a picture before you drive away with a fist full of ice cream.

Owling
Owling is derived from planking and consists of a person crouching like an owl in uncommon elevated places. Your hands should be positioned on your face like glasses with three fingers flared out like feathers.

Gnoming
Gnoming consists of crouching as small as you can on a random lawn and having your picture taken. When crouching you make a small triangular hat with your hands similar to the one that a ceramic gnome has.

We all know that being a Pres student leaves us with zero time to think about our appearances at school. The following quick and simple hairstyles can take the thinking out of styling your hair during the school week.

Monday: You’re in a beginning-of-the-week slump, and there are still five more days of school left before your next time to breathe. Start your week off with the traditional Pres bun. Some variations can include: a low bun, top-of-head bun, or a braided bun.

For a twist on your everyday bun, try the braided bun. Place small, random braids throughout your hair, then collect it all into a bun. For another variation of a braided bun, gather your hair into a ponytail (high or low), then separate the ponytail into two sections. Braid each section separately. You can choose to secure them or not. Then, wrap one braid in a clockwise direction, and the other counterclockwise. Secure each braid underneath your bun with a few bobby pins.

Wednesday: You’ve made it halfway through the week, but you’re super tired from staying up until unbelievable hours of the night trying to finish that crazy load of homework you were assigned. Stay collected on the outside with a cute and easy fishtail, which will make it impossible for anyone to guess the exhaustion you feel inside. It will give you a casual, put-together look, keep the hair out of your face all day, and is a nice alternative to the normal everyday braid.

Simply separate your hair into two even sections. Hold both sections in your left hand, but keep them separated. Grab a thin section of hair from outside of the right side, and cross it over to the left side, joining it to the left side. Then hold the two sides with your right hand. With your left hand, take a thin section from the left side and cross it over to the right side, joining it to the right side. Repeat this all the way down until your hair is all braided. Then secure with an elastic.

Friday: It’s Friday! You have the weekend to look forward to, but still have a million tests to take care of. Keep your cool with this fun twist on braids. “The Waterfall Braid.” It will keep your hair out of your face in a pretty way so you can focus on acing those tests.

First, collect a small section of hair at the top of one side of your head, close to your part, and begin by braiding the strands three times like a French braid. Once you’ve French braided the left section of hair (now in the center) drop the right strands and let them fall along the side of your head.

Pick up a new piece of hair in the dropped section’s place, as well as a new piece on the left side like a traditional French braid, and braid the three sections again, dropping the right portion after you’ve completed the braid. Continue this process, wrapping the waterfall braid toward the back of your head as you go.

Once you’ve passed the back of your head with the waterfall braid, end with a traditional braid and secure the end with an elastic. If you’re feeling really up for it, braid in a pretty colored ribbon for an extra pop of color or add some style with a flower or jeweled clip where the waterfall braid and traditional braid meet.

Black and White is coming up. You’ve got the date, the dress, the shoes, but you’re having a dilemma over how to style your hair. Don’t worry, the Voice has you covered.

Rolled Up-do—Part your hair to the side, then roll the front section of one side upward into a twist, pinning it against your head as you go if needed. Then repeat this on the opposite side. When both sides are completely twisted, grab the twisted ends of your hair and wrap one twist in a clockwise direction, and wrap the other twist in a counterclockwise direction. This will then look like a bun, and use bobby pins to secure it. Use hairspray to prevent flyaways from slipping out. Secure your hair with bobby pins, then use a pretty headband to accessorize the look.

Curled Side Pony—Curl your hair (as loosely or tightly as you wish). Then simply gather your hair into a low ponytail, slightly to one side. Secure with a clear elastic. You can put a cute hairpin or flower (something to go with your dress) to cover the elastic.

Curled bun—Work volumizer mousse throughout your hair. Separate the back and front sections of your hair (sort of draw a line from ear to ear). Separate the back section into two parts: right and left. Tie a knot with the right and left sections, and fasten them with bobby pins. Begin curling each individual strand, and then fasten them to your hair. Repeat this until all of your hair is curled and fastened. Curl the front section of hair with some looser curls. Finally, either braid or clip your bangs and remaining hair to the bun in the back. You can choose to add a headband to complete your look.

So now your only worry should be which style to choose! With these fun styles, Pres girls can break their messy hair reputation, both at school and at Black and White. Even if you don’t wear these styles out of the house, I know at least half of us will try them out as a new outlet for procrastination. If this is the case, procrastinate away ladies.

What are the hottest fall trends? The Voice tells you what you need to know to stay style-savvy this school year. Find out what’s cutting edge in everything from shoes, nails, and hairstyles to backpacks and technology.

Tinsel/Feathers

A few years ago, blue and pink streaks were everywhere – now tinsel and feathers add flair to your hair. Tinsel and feather extensions are easy to put in. A hair stylist will use small clamps that will firmly clip the feather or tinsel piece to the root of your hair. A popular place nearby where you can get this done is Fusion Hair Salon. Prices range from $5-$10 a piece depending on the thickness or color of the piece.

Northface Backpacks

These backpacks are a trend that started last year, but are still going strong. Originally designed for outdoors activities, these backpacks are made to be durable, which is perfect for school. Prices go up to about $100 and can be found at the factory stores or online at www.thenorthface.com.

Macbook Pros

Macbook Pros are certainly the new technological gadget due to the sleek look, portable design and newly upgraded software. These computers are making many appearances in classrooms all over Pres. They have a battery life of up to seven hours of continuous use, easy to use applications and are good for taking notes. Currently, these laptops only come in the matte silver but you can buy bold colored clip-on covers that will make your laptop pop.

Vans and Toms

There is no denying that Vans and Toms shoes are still a favorite. Known for their stylish look and comfort, these shoes come in funky colors, patterns and even textures. They are $50 – $60 and can be found at many stores such as their factory stores as well as department stores including Nordstom and Macy’s.

Nike Free Run 2

The Nike Free Run 2 is the shoe to keep in mind when shopping for athletic gear. They are specially designed for comfort and flexibility so that you feel you are not wearing shoes at all. As a bonus, these shoes come in all kinds of eccentric color mash ups, but if you do not like the colors or the fit of the shoes, you can design your own Nike Free Runs 2 at www.store.nike.com.

Chic Prints

Chic prints are thin pieces of film with designs on them that can be placed over nails for a just polished look. These nail decorators can be used on fingernails or toenails and come in all types of patterns and graphics. They are easily put on and removed. For $15, you can get 16 of these chic print strips at Sephora.

But if you don’t have the time or money to go to a salon to get a mani-pedi, there’s no need to panic. There are lots of quick and easy ways to paint your nails for only $5-$8 in fifteen minutes!

Wild/Crazy:

Nothing says “I’m ready to tackle the week” like crackle nail polish. If you’re feeling like this is your week to be noticed and have an open mind, begin by applying any base coat color on your nails. After applying one to two coats, apply one thin layer of O.P.I’s Nail Lacquer crackle polish, which comes in white, black and silver. While drying, the polish begins to split, creating a cool, crackled effect. Before you know it, your nails will be looking fresh and glamorous.

Calm/Simple:

Sometimes a simple pastel colored polish can express that this will be the week that you’re calm, cool and collected. Apply Sally Hansen’s, or any other brand, pastel colored polish to your nails. For best results, apply two thin coats or until satisfied. Sally Hansen’s Mint Sprint and Petal Push are especially hot this season.

Unique/Creative:

If you’re tired of painting your nails with the usual colors, try mixing it up and join the trend of marbling nails. Though this procedure may seem difficult, it results in a fun and spunky look that will make everyone jealous of your rockin’ nails.

Begin by using tape, preferably scotch tape, and tape around your nails so that the skin around the nails will not get any polish on them. Then, fill a small Dixie cup with water and pour a small amount of three to four of your favorite nail polish colors into the cup of water and swirl it around with a toothpick.

Now you must dip your fingernails one by one into the swirled polish. For best results, dip your nails as quickly as possible. You will need to remove the nail polish out of the water every three to four nails and repeat the process of pouring the same colors and swirling them together. Continue until all nails are marbled and remove the tape after your nails dry.

Now you can get through the week with the unique and creative look you that deserve.

Cat Eye Sunglasses

Sick of seeing RayBans on everyone’s faces for the past year? Cat eye sunglasses, reminiscent of those of the 1950s, are a good way to break from the crowd and bring back some classic feline femininity without looking like your grandma. Check out places like Forever 21, where you can get them for a good price–sunglasses are usually one of the first things to get lost at the beach during the summer, and you don’t want to invest in them unless you’re really in love with them.

Footwear

The 70s are back, with espadrilles, platforms and clog-like sandals as the featured footwear of runway models. If these don’t quite fit your foot fancy, look to some kitten heels for more special occasions or kick back in the always-comfortable flat sandals or flip flops. When buying new sandals, beware of straps that can cause blisters. Also, try to wear them as much as possible for as long as possible in the store to be sure they fit you right. Otherwise, you won’t be able to return them, since most retailers won’t accept returns on shoes after they’ve been worn outside.

Nail Colors

White, soft pink, soft blue, yellow and earth tones make for solid foundations. Keep your nails mellow and go for the bold color statements in your clothes themselves. To spice up the neutral colors, try adding pearlescent top coats and fun shrinking top coats! Don’t break the bank on buying nail polish, though; it’s best to splurge only on polish that you know you’ll wear often, like base and top coats (especially since they don’t usually have color). Brands like OPI and Revlon have great colors and reasonable prices for their quality. Sally Hansen is the best for experimenting with new colors at a good price whose quality won’t tear apart your nails and leave a lasting finish.

Tassels

Looming in the background of the trends of the past year are tassels. We’ve seen them adorned on moccasins, loafers, fringes of flapper revival dresses and, most recently, the beautiful purple earrings of Natalie Portman’s Oscar dress. Tassels are expected to make their way to belts, swim suits and handbags this summer.

Pixie Haircuts

Love it or hate it? That was the main question regarding twenty-year-old Emma Watsons’ debut of an incredibly short hairstyle in August 2010. After completing the final film of the Harry Potter saga, the British actress drastically traded in her long locks for a cropped ‘do. She told Entertainment Weekly, “Oh my God, it was the most liberating thing! The stylist just grabbed the back of my hair and took a whole ponytail of hair out. It felt amazing. I love it.”

Stars such as Carey Mulligan, Ginnifer Goodwin, Halle Berry, Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Presentation’s own Sophie Wood took to embracing the cut as well. The short hairstyle accentuates one’s youthful characteristics while adding a touch of femininity and charm. The upkeep sure is easy as well! Sophie Wood says, “It is so much easier to maintain. I only use a quarter of the shampoo I was using before, and I can just wake up and come to school without worrying about it.”

If you are wondering what type of face shape is best for this cut, aim for long and oval shapes. The short cut balances out the long dynamic of one’s face. If you have a round face, it is probably not a good idea to get a pixie cut—the cropped style may make your face look even rounder than before!

If you are ready to take a style risk and experiment with a pixie haircut, try donating your hair to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to individuals under 21 suffering from hair-loss due to a wide variety of medical conditions. You will help to give confidence to a young woman at Locks of Love, and your risk may pay off!

Tumblr

2,918,439,427: the number of total posts on Tumblr.com as of January 25th 2011. Around four years old, Tumblr is a website allowing individuals to share the things they love, create, and think. Users can post text, quotes, photos, videos, and other media on a personalized website while customizing their pages with a variety of colors and background themes. It can be completely private or totally public, where family members and friends may view and contribute to one’s blog. Users may choose to “follow” other tumbleblogs and click the reblog button, automatically reposting the content of another’s tumbleblog to their own. If you see a great photograph or video clip on someone else’s tumblr, you can reblog it on your own page! The photographs are high resolution, the mobile ability allows for a free iPhone app, and best of all, it is free! Joey Andrews, a sophomore, enjoys the simplicity and customization of the website. “I like how I can freely express my likes and dislikes so easily. It’s especially fun to find pictures of beautiful locations you’ve always wanted to go to.”

Whether one has a strong love for a certain genre of music or a passion for fashion, users can easily find entertaining and fun posts to reblog on their personal profile. It covers a wide variety of interests, an aspect that has attracted millions of users already. As The New York Times puts it, “Tumblr makes blogging blissfully easy.”

Combat Boots

If you are looking for chic, vintage, lace-up boots, then combat boots are for you. Wear them with skinny jeans and a burnout tee or pair them with a floral dress to balance out the grunge look. They can range in heights, from the smallest ones covering the ankles to the tallest reaching all the way up to one’s knees. Black and brown are the most common colors, and the comfortable boots add just enough edginess to any wardrobe. Rachel Bilson, Sienna Miller, Jessica Alba, and Rihanna are just a few celebrities who enjoy wearing combat boots out around Los Angeles. They are perfect for a cold day, a shopping trip, or simply spending time with friends.

If you are interested in buying some combat boots, you do not have to look very far. Target and Forever 21 both sell black and brown boots for $30, while Urban Outfitters, a pricier option, sells combat boots ranging from $70 to $200 in a variety of different styles. DSW offers brown ones for $55, and ALDO charges around $80 to $120 for a pair.

Along with the cold temperatures of winter comes a new wave of fashion in one specific department – pajamas! This season, Pres girls want to be comfortable, but still look cute. After all, there are some Saturdays and Sundays when we tend to stay in our sleepwear throughout most of the day.

A ubiquitous favorite, flannel pajamas return every year because they are simple and easy to wear. Because of the many prints that they come in, they are also very stylish. The loose shirt with a collarand spacious pants make flannel pajamas very comfortable (and perfect for eating lots of cookies).

Silk pajamas, although not very common among teenagers, are a great option for sleepwear. They may be a bit costly, but are worth it for their softness and sophisticated look. Look classy even while you sleep!

Pajamas that allow diversity and creativity are the mix n’ match t-shirts with flannel bottoms. Especially since it is getting colder each night into winter, longer sleeves are becoming necessary. Print shirts or plain with a simple design pair well with patterned flannel pj bottoms.

No more bare feet in the evening anymore because it’s time to break out our feet’s best friends. One thing all Pres girls love – slippers – are back on the scene. Sweater slippers were last year’s favorites but they came back as stylish feet warmers again this year. Animal prints, especially zebra and cheetah, are very popular, but also more and more actual animal shaped slippers are becoming popular, too.

Along with our pajamas and slippers, there’s nothing like an over sized sweater and hot cup of cocoa that will make us more in the mood for the cold winter ahead. Baggy knit sweaters, that would be seen as old-fashioned and ugly are now back in style. They can be thrown over any outfit, but are specifically perfect for comfy nights at home.

For many Pres students, winter is their favorite time of year. Good memories are made sitting around in pajamas and drinking hot cocoa while watching a Christmas movie with the family. There’s nothing like the feel of warmth of pajamas and slippers to remind us that the wonderful holiday season is back.

Quality flannel, silk and mix-n-match pajamas can be found at Victoria’s Secret. Their Dreamer Flannel Pajama is $49.50. Also, Gap and Target carry a variety of cute reasonably priced pajamas. Adorable slippers and sweaters can be found at Urban Outfitters. Their bird moccasins, which are come in reindeer and squirrel, are $24.
